National Music Museum specialized tour of Northern Italy and Cremona

Deadline for reservations EXTENDED: July 2, 2019

Among Italy’s many travel treasures is a must-visit destination for music and musical instrument lovers: the city of Cremona—hometown of violin-making giant Antonio Stradivari and the birthplace of classical stringed instruments. It is fitting then that the National Music Museum (NMM), Vermillion, South Dakota, itself home to five Stradivari instruments, as well as numerous other Cremonese masterpieces, is heading up a unique tour to this historic cradle of music craftsmanship.

The seven-day guided tour, which also takes travelers to the cultural best of northern Italy, will happen September 20-27, 2019. It is scheduled to coincide with the opening of “Reunion in Cremona,” an exhibit partnership of the NMM and the Museo del Violino in Cremona. This exhibit will showcase eight Cremonese stringed instruments from the National Music Museum, including three rare Stradivaris, within the context of their birthplace. (The exhibit itself will run for a year, September 21, 2019-October 18 2020.)

After exploring Romanesque and Renaissance Cremona and attending the exclusive opening gala for the NMM/Museo del Violino exhibit, as well as spending a music-filled day in the Museo del Violino and the historic Carutti stringed-instrument collection at the Civic Museum, the tour group will head by private bus to Sirmione on beautiful Lake Garda (and a tasting at local Lugana wineries). Next, the tour takes in the splendor of Mantua island and its Ducal Palace, followed by almost three days in cosmopolitan Milan to experience in person Da Vinci’s masterwork “Last Supper,” the Sforza Castle, the city’s extraordinary gothic cathedral, as well as the spectacular glass-arcaded architecture of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II mall, and the musical landmark La Scala Opera House, among much more.

All accommodations will be 4-star hotels. Gourmet and private-home meals, attraction fees, private bus service, winetasting, and a boat ride are among the amenities covered in the trip’s package cost. This unique trip also benefits the National Music Museum—through a tax-deductible donation included in the overall fee.

The cost for the tour package is $3,200 per person (based on double occupancy). Airfare is not included.

For more information and/orreservations, call Carol Robertson, National Music Museum, direct: (605) 658-3452

Spaces are limited to ten more registrants, so please reserve soon.

While the National Music Museum in Vermillion is closed for architectural expansion (reopening slated for 2021), it has committed to continue displaying aspects of its holdings, through exhibits such as “Reunion in Cremona,” as well as through ‘pop-up museum’ sites in South Dakota, the NMM’s new eMuseum web pages, and ramped up social media.
